SGW Memorial Corporation is comprised of family and friends of Steve Whitlock. Steve died in 1989 after losing his battle with cancer of the brain stem.
Steve was an inspiration to us all as he demonstrated his zest for life during his 13 month battle against cancer. Steve's family and friends came together for a cause and a purpose: to raise money for a great cause in memory of someone we love, respect and miss dearly.
So The Steven G Whitlock Memorial Corporation was founded in 1989, whose purpose is to hold an annual golf tournament to raise money to help kids battling cancer.
Camp Esperanza was founded by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bridewell in 1982 in association with Childrens' Medical Center of Dallas.
Camp Esperanza held it's first camp at Camp Sweeney in Gainsville, Texas in 1983. Camp Esperanza moved to its current site at Camp John Marc in Meridian, Texas in 1991.
The first camp had 68 campers with 35 volunteers. The camp now with it's staff of volunteers of doctors, nurses and layman can accomodate 140 kids, but there's a waiting list. It's a slice of Heaven one week a year for these kids to interact with other kids who can identify with their health issues and medical needs.
