Since 1989, family and friends of Steve Whitlock have been working tirelessly raising money for kids battling cancer. We elected to contribute the proceeds from the Steven G Whitlock Memorial Golf Tournament to Camp Esperanza which is produced by The Bridewell Foundation.
Camp Esperanza is held once a year at Camp John Marc for as many as 140 kids battling cancer. Kids attending camp are given an opportunity to interact with kids facing similar challenges and have fun swimming, camping, horseback riding, fishing and ziplining to name a few. Proceeds from SGW go towards underwriting the cost for each kid to attend camp, a cost of about $500.
When Steve died in 1989 after battling cancer of the brain stem it was very difficult for Steve's family and friends. Steve was very energetic, personable and loved life. We saw the same characteristics in the brave kids who attend Camp Esperanza each year. Since inception, SGW Memorial has contributed $526,950 to The Bridewell Foundation thanks to the contributions and participation of the tournaments' volunteers, golfers, sponsors and donors.
Steve was 25 in 1988 when he was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, cancer of the brain stem. Steve was a graduate of Plano Senior High School in Plano Texas, employed by Data Connection, Inc. and had a large circle of friends who loved him for his good character, sense of humor and zest for life.
Friends, family and volunteers unselfishly continue to contribute their time, experience and resources to hold this annual event to remember Steve and to raise funds to help other brave kids with their fight against cancer. It takes a considerable amount of time and effort each year to produce our annual tournament and this could not be accomplished without the faithful and loyal few. These incredible folks have been with us since Day 1 and every year since. 29 years and counting. . . .
